Graduates will leave with a strong understanding and working knowledge of common rental bike fleet maintenance and service skills that will ensure they are prepared for a mechanic career in a bicycle rental shop.

Graduates are eligible to book space during Open Shop days to continue developing their skills.

The Rental Bike Technician course focuses on training and experience specifically for staff working in rental-only bike shops. With the complexity of modern mountain bikes requiring detailed maintenance and servicing to ensure safe, reliable rental bikes, this course gives students the skills to perform routine maintenance tasks and diagnose and remedy common faults that can occur throughout the season. With a focus on bike-park fleets, this course includes advanced brake bleeding, wheel truing and re-building, and routine suspension servicing, along with derailleur and drivetrain installation, alignment and replacement procedures.

REQUIREMENTS

Students should have a basic working knowledge of bicycle repair and a basic understanding of bicycle component and repair terminology.

SINGLE COURSE COSTS

Tuition: $1500 + gst

The Rental Bike Technician course is focused on preparing the student for the fast-paced and on-demand job of diagnosing, repairing and safely maintaining a large fleet of rental bikes. As a common entry point into the career of Bicycle Mechanics, this course narrows the focus of the full Professional Mechanic course into a shorter option that gets graduates trained fast and ready to work.

Rental Technician Skills:

Derailleur and Drivetrains: Fault diagnostics, replacement installation, routine maintenance of derailleurs and drivetrains found on common modern rental fleet bikes.

Hydraulic Brake Systems: Understanding of braking systems and their servicing and maintenance. Diagnostics of common issues and their solutions following analytical procedures.

Bearings: Bearing types and grades. Removal, installation and adjustment of the various bearing systems including headsets, bottom brackets, hubs and suspension pivots.

Wheels: Development and practice of accurate and efficient wheel truing procedures. Spoke sizing and replacement. Rim replacement and re-tensioning.

Suspension: Spring and Damper theory and functionality. Common faults and diagnostics. 50hr service interval maintenance procedures.
