This course focuses on field experience in varied terrain with a focus on winter mountaineering. The course will have an emphasis on orienteering, natural shelter construction, site selection and survival first aid. Students will participate in group management as well as route navigation. Essential skills will areas such as terrain selection and safe travel preparation will give students the ability to effectively use this information in the field.

Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Demonstrate the construction of an all weather survival shelter.
- Exhibit the ability to identify and treat hypo/hyperthermia in the field.
- Demonstrate the ability to prepare an emergency kit for the most common emergencies encountered in the field.
- Exhibit the ability to make a fire in any weather or condition.
- Demonstrate "gear-less" water purification as well as common purification and treatment measures.
